Early Interceptive Orthodontics

Franklin and Murphy, NC Early Interceptive Orthodontics

Early orthodontic treatment for children ages 7 to 10, focused on guiding growth and preventing more complex issues later.

Early interceptive orthodontics is designed for children who still have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth. At this stage, treatment is not about fully straightening teeth. The focus is on guiding development so the jaw and teeth can move into healthier positions.

When Early Orthodontic Treatment May Be Recommended

Some children benefit from early care when there are signs that development is not progressing as expected. This can include:

  • Crowding or limited space for incoming teeth
  • Bite problems such as crossbite
  • Jaw growth concerns

Addressing these early can make future treatment more manageable and more predictable.

Early Interceptive Orthodontics How It Works

Treatment may involve appliances designed to guide growth and create space as the mouth develops. These may include:

  • Palatal expanders
  • Space-maintaining appliances
  • Limited orthodontic appliances

Each plan is based on the individual child and how their teeth and jaw are developing.

Early TreatmentWhat Happens After

After this phase, growth continues to be monitored.

Some patients may later move into a second phase of treatment focused on final alignment once all permanent teeth are in place. Others may not need additional treatment.
